A typical Hertfordshire Autumn morning greeted the entrants of this year’s Autumn Hilly with a touch of fog, a chill in the air and the sun trying hard to break through the clouds and shed a bit of light onto proceedings.
So it was that a large (well 6!) group of spectators gathered at the side of the road between Codicote and Whitwell ready to cheer on the brave souls who were to attempt two laps of the 9 mile course. Getting the riders underway at 9:01 exactly was Dave Summerell who headed off into the still morning, closely followed by his club mates at 1 minute intervals all resplendent in yellow and blue.
Coming up trumps in the end was Nigel Wilson, with the help of a “borrowed” wheelset and coming in with a time of 55:02. It’s understood that Newcastle United FC have already added his victory to their honours list, and are hastily arranging a open top bus tour around the city to celebrate in the absence of any comparable success since Victorian times.
